Blood glucose after ≥8 hours of fasting. Used to diagnose diabetes and impaired fasting glucose.

All ≥ 18 yrs 3.9 – 5.6 Normal fasting. IFG: 5.6–6.9; Diabetes: ≥7.0 on two occasions

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Hypoglycaemia (<3.9) — insulin excess, alcohol, Addison's disease, hepatic failure, insulinoma.
High / Increased
Hyperglycaemia — diabetes mellitus, pre-diabetes (IFG), stress hyperglycaemia, glucocorticoids, Cushing's.
