Reflects average blood glucose over the preceding 2–3 months. Preferred for diabetes diagnosis and monitoring of glycaemic control.

All ≥ 18 yrs < 42 Normal <42 mmol/mol (<6%). Pre-diabetes: 42–47; Diabetes diagnosis: ≥48 mmol/mol (≥6.5%)

Clinical Interpretation

High / Increased
Poor glycaemic control in diabetes, pre-diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, haemochromatosis. Falsely elevated with prolonged RBC survival; falsely low in haemolysis, sickle cell, G6PD deficiency.
