Second most abundant intracellular cation. Co-factor for >300 enzymatic reactions. Hypomagnesaemia is a common and often under-recognised cause of refractory hypokalaemia.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Hypomagnesaemia — malnutrition, malabsorption, chronic diarrhoea, alcohol, diuretics, proton pump inhibitors (chronic use), diabetes.
High / Increased
Hypermagnesaemia — renal failure, excessive magnesium supplementation.
