By-product of amino acid metabolism, detoxified to urea in the liver. Elevated in hepatic encephalopathy and urea cycle defects.

Clinical Interpretation

High / Increased
Hepatic encephalopathy (liver failure, cirrhosis), urea cycle disorders, valproate toxicity, GI bleeding (in liver disease), portosystemic shunt.
