Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Microcytic (<80 fL) — iron deficiency, thalassaemia, anaemia of chronic disease (sometimes), sideroblastic anaemia.
High / Increased
Macrocytic (>100 fL) — vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, hypothyroidism, liver disease, alcohol, haematological malignancy, drugs (methotrexate, hydroxyurea).
