D-Dimer

D-Dimer Fibrin Degradation Product XDP
Sodium citrate or serum (lab-specific) µg/L FEU

About this test

Cross-linked fibrin degradation product; elevated when intravascular fibrin formation and breakdown has occurred. Primary use is to rule out VTE (DVT/PE) in low-to-moderate pre-test probability.

Reference Ranges

Sex Age Range Notes
All ≥ 18 yrs < 500 Standard threshold <500 µg/L FEU (age-adjusted: >50 years: age × 10 µg/L FEU reduces false positives)

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Normal D-Dimer — VTE excluded in low/intermediate pre-test probability.
High / Increased
Elevated — DVT, PE, DIC, post-surgery/trauma, malignancy, infection, pregnancy, atrial fibrillation, stroke, liver disease (many causes of elevation).
