About this test

Key clotting substrate converted to fibrin by thrombin. Measured by Clauss method. Also a positive acute-phase reactant. Reduced in DIC, liver failure, afibrinogenaemia.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Hypofibrinogenaemia — DIC (consumptive), liver failure, fibrinolytic therapy (tPA), congenital afibrinogenaemia.
High / Increased
Elevated fibrinogen — inflammatory/acute-phase reaction, pregnancy, CVD risk marker.
