Soluble Transferrin Receptor

sTfR Soluble Transferrin Receptor Level
Serum (SST) mg/L

About this test

Truncated form of the cellular transferrin receptor shed into the bloodstream proportional to erythropoietic activity and iron demand. Unlike ferritin, not an acute-phase reactant — useful for detecting iron deficiency in the presence of inflammation.

Reference Ranges

Sex Age Range Notes
All ≥ 18 yrs 2.2 – 5 Adult; elevated with iron deficiency or erythroid expansion

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Low — aplastic anaemia, low erythropoietic activity.
High / Increased
Elevated — iron deficiency (even when ferritin is falsely normal due to inflammation), haemolytic anaemia, thalassaemia, polycythaemia, ineffective erythropoiesis.
