About this test

Iron transport protein (synthesised by liver). Provides alternative to TIBC for assessing iron transport capacity. Also a nutritional marker (negative acute-phase protein).

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Low — iron overload, liver disease (reduced synthesis), malnutrition, nephrotic syndrome, acute inflammation.
High / Increased
Elevated — iron deficiency, pregnancy.
