About this test

Essential for carbohydrate metabolism and neurological function. Deficiency causes Wernicke's encephalopathy and peripheral neuropathy (beriberi). Common in alcohol dependence and malnutrition.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Deficiency — Wernicke's encephalopathy (confusion, ophthalmoplegia, ataxia), Korsakoff's psychosis, wet or dry beriberi.
