About this test

Causes hypercalcaemia of malignancy by mimicking PTH at peripheral receptors. PTH is suppressed. Found in squamous cell carcinoma, renal carcinoma, breast cancer, and others.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Undetectable — PTHrP-mediated hypercalcaemia excluded.
High / Increased
Elevated — malignancy-associated hypercalcaemia (humoral). Confirm with imaging to identify primary tumour.
