About this test

Peptide hormone from parathyroid glands regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Intact PTH (1–84) is the active form measured by modern assays.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Low PTH with hypercalcaemia — hypercalcaemia of malignancy (PTHrP), vitamin D toxicity, sarcoidosis, immobilisation.
High / Increased
Elevated PTH — primary hyperparathyroidism (with hypercalcaemia), secondary hyperparathyroidism (CKD, vitamin D deficiency — with low/normal calcium), tertiary hyperparathyroidism (renal transplant).
