Concentration of haemoglobin in a given volume of red blood cells. Rarely low in isolation; high MCHC suggests hereditary spherocytosis.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Hypochromic — iron deficiency anaemia (late), thalassaemia.
High / Increased
Hyperchromic — hereditary spherocytosis, severe dehydration, sickle cell disease (HbSS in crisis).
