Enzyme found in liver (biliary canaliculi), bone osteoblasts, intestine, and placenta. Elevation may indicate cholestatic liver disease or bone disease.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Reduced — hypothyroidism, pernicious anaemia, zinc deficiency.
High / Increased
Cholestasis — biliary obstruction, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), PSC, drugs; Bone disease — Paget's disease, osteomalacia, bone metastases, hyperparathyroidism.
