About this test

Final oxidation product of purine metabolism. Elevated levels cause urate crystal deposition in joints (gout) and the renal tract (nephrolithiasis).

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Hypouricaemia — xanthine oxidase deficiency, Fanconi syndrome, SIADH.
High / Increased
Hyperuricaemia — gout, myeloproliferative disease, tumour lysis syndrome, renal failure, diuretics, alcohol, high-purine diet.
