About this test

Liver-derived peptide hormone that is the master regulator of iron homeostasis. Inhibits ferroportin-mediated iron export. Elevated in anaemia of inflammation; suppressed in iron deficiency.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Low hepcidin — iron deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia, hereditary haemochromatosis (HFE-related), hypoxia.
High / Increased
Elevated hepcidin — anaemia of chronic disease (infection, inflammation, malignancy), CKD.
