About this test

Pulsatile secretion from anterior pituitary. Random levels are unhelpful; stimulation tests (insulin tolerance test, glucagon test) are used for deficiency, suppression tests (OGTT) for excess.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Low — growth hormone deficiency (adult or paediatric); confirmed by stimulation test.
High / Increased
Elevated (failure to suppress on OGTT) — acromegaly. Physiological elevation during sleep, exercise, stress.
