Rapid screening test for infectious mononucleosis caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Positive in ~85% of adolescent/adult cases; less sensitive in young children.

Clinical Interpretation

Low / Decreased
Negative — does not exclude EBV; check EBV-specific serology (VCA IgM/IgG, EBNA).
High / Increased
Positive — infectious mononucleosis (EBV). Avoid contact sports (splenomegaly risk), avoid amoxicillin (maculopapular rash).
